Type in Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator has some powerful tools to shape and modify display type (type that is used in headlines etc.) I don’t recommend it for laying out body copy however.

When discussing typography, it is necessary to understand the terminology. Here is a wonderful site that has an extensive list of typographic terms. Once you are familiar with some of the terms you can begin to compare typefaces to see how they differ.

Here is a fun way to get familiar with the art of letter spacing or kerning.

But typography is more than just dissecting a typeface into its component parts. When used well, type can add meaning to the text. It can also be expressive, although some old school typographers reject the use of type in this way.

The following clips are from the movie ‘Helvetica’ by director Gary Hurstwit. The movie is ostensibly about the typeface that defined modern graphic design, but it also tackles some of the issues surrounding graphic design in general.

Michael Beirut discusses what Helvetica meant to modern graphic design.

David Carson discusses how breaking the rules of traditional typography leads to creative results.

Georgia Straight Cover Illustration Assignment

The IDEA 277 Digital Illustration class at Capilano University was assigned an editorial cover illustration for The Georgia Straight Magazine to accompany either one of two articles on politically charged subjects.

Click here to see all the great work.

The first article discussed the risks of building a pipeline from the Alberta tarsands, through the pristine wilderness of northern BC, to our delicate but treacherous coastline. The second article examined the possible consequences of ‘normalizing’ the sex trade by creating co-op brothels.

Handling subjects like these is a real challenge for an illustrator. The articles are well balanced and explore both sides of the issue. A successful illustration must reflect that balance while still engaging viewers with dramatic and compelling imagery.

The student’s were required to use Adobe Illustrator at some point in the execution of the illustration.

Ad Pages Cover Illustration

This past summer I was asked to illustrate the cover of Business in Vancouver’s Ad Pages directory. The directory is an annual publication listing the suppliers to the creative industry in the lower mainland. It’s a valuable resource that is seen by nearly everyone in the industry so of course I agreed to do it.

The cover illustration was to accompany the feature article about outdoor guerrilla marketing. The article referenced Telus’ flamingo campaign of a few years back, which saw 10,000 plastic pink flamingos popping up one morning on Vancouver streets. As well, the article talked about the conventional use of billboards for outdoor advertising.

As I developed my sketch, I wanted to capture the feel of morning in the city as the flamingos emerge from the mist. I also wanted to include both the plastic flamingos and the billboards in the image. But the fact that the flamingos exist at ground level, while the billboards are up high meant I would have to use a sharply skewed  perspective. As soon as I began sketching I saw a rhythm develop in multiples of both objects. I also saw the opportunity to use the billboards to integrate type within the illustration.

To draw several billboards in perspective would have been a great challenge, so I decided to use SketchUp, Google’s free 3d rendering software. I downloaded and modified an existing billboard model and distributed several copies in space. I then exported the wireframe to illustrator where I rendered the billboards using vector shapes.

The flamingos were created with vector shapes and multiplied over and over until a pleasant composition was created. Extensive use of masks and overlaid textures were used in the background. One of the textures is a florid wallpaper pattern that is barely noticeable.

IDEA 377 Second Assignment

The IDEA Program is unique amongst post secondary art schools in its inclusion of illustration into the process of strategic design thinking.

• Graphic designers with an ability to illustrate have an immensely larger visual vocabulary to work with.
• Illustrators with design training can facilitate stronger visual solutions.

Mix in industry standard technology training, business and marketing instruction and instructors drawn from the industry and it becomes apparent why the IDEA Program is so highly regarded.

The IDEA Program relies heavily upon its reputation and has done minimal marketing.

Until now . . .
